Providing emerging female directors with insider knowledge on how advertising agency creative teams and heads of TV production departments select and work with TVC directors, Free the Bid is holding a TVC Pitch Intensive in both Sydney and Melbourne.

In a transparent and supportive environment, attendees will get the chance to be taken through a complete pitch process with a TV department and creative team. The workshop will host a number of experienced industry leaders including executive producer Elissa Maine and executive creative director Penny Buck, along with TV department heads from M&C Saatchi and DDB.

Says M&C Saatchi creative director Sharon Edmondston: “Since the ‘Free The Bid’ initiative arrived in Australia, real inroads have been made towards gender equality in film. Events have provided invaluable industry connections along with the guidance and support needed to help emerging female directors gain the confidence and skills to thrive. There’s nothing better than a direct and transparent dialogue to remind us how to get the best result in our collaborations. This next event will prove to be as valuable for the participating agencies as it will be for the filmmakers, which is why our team at M&C Saatchi has jumped at the chance to be a part of this highly impactful session.”

Says DDB Sydney executive creative director Tara Ford: “This is something we should all support. Not only is equality in this industry the right thing to do from a human point of view, supporting women makes creative and commercial sense. We are all looking for a fresh and nuanced point of view and using female directors just may be our secret weapon.”

Each participant will be briefed on a speculative TV campaign and will work with the creative team on creating a pitch for this campaign. The participant will receive feedback and support throughout this process to enable this often-mysterious process to be explored and to gain a true understanding of the process from an agency point of view. Inviting creative industry professionals to take to the stage to discuss pathways to improve the craft techniques of working female directors, the workshop provides attendees with the opportunity to network and includes case studies from creative teams, agency producers and clients.

Says writer/director Aimee-Lee Curran: “I’m so grateful these workshops exist. I’ve been to three now, and leave feeling as if I’ve been sitting in on supportive meeting of knowledge sharing. The topics covered are informative, providing a practical insight into how to live as a full time director. It’s like a bridge between film school and working in the industry and making a living. A great chance to ask ALL the questions, and meet excellent women working in the film industry.”

Adds Free The Bid Australia’s Jasmin Tarasin: “Building on our successful director workshops, our upcoming TVC Pitch Intensive is focused on the process from the agency point of view. It’s a great insight for directors to get a whole picture of this process. I created this Intensive to open up and demystify the pitching process for emerging directors so they are ready to start taking briefs and get working. We are very excited about our Melbourne workshop, as this is the first workshop to be held in Melbourne.”
