It started with a simple idea: create a platform for a new wave of visual storytellers. Today, Tropfest is one of Australia’s most iconic cultural events, screening short films under seven minutes that include the annual Tropfest Signature Item.
In 2017, that signature item was the pineapple, and you can see it pop up in all sorts of weird and wonderful incarnations in all of the finalists films.
Sydney filmmaker Matt Day was crowned the winner this year. His film, The Mother Situation, about three adult siblings assisting their terminally ill mother in committing suicide, took out the top prize, followed by Arielle Thomas & Ellenor Argyropoulos‘s Meat & Potatoes and Daphne Do‘s Wibble Wobble at second and third place respectively.
If you spent the weekend cowering in fear from the big scary fireball in the sky and didn’t manage to make it to Tropfest 2017, then worry not dear friends, for those lovely people at Red Bull TV have collated all of the finalists films in one place for your enjoyment.
