Remember the days when The Human Centipede was the grossest thing in cinema? Well, it looks Steve Ellison (AKA Flying Lotus) has gone and marched a thousand miles further with his debut feature, Kuso.
The experimental multi-genre music producer, electronic musician, DJ, filmmaker, and rapper from Los Angeles, California, premiered his film at Sundance last week, and critics were so disgusted by the film – which features a smorgasbord of surreal madness such as a man having sex with a talking boil on a woman’s neck – that they walked out of the cinema en masse.
Apparently, Kuso is a collection of semi-connected short films chronicling the lives of the mutated women, men, and children of Los Angeles, following the earthquake to end all earthquakes.
Luring them in with an intense hipster credibility, it looks like Ellison has given a deliberate ‘fuck you’ to the entire industry. The Verge described it as ‘The Grossest Movie Ever Made’ while Hollywood industry bible Variety said the experience was ‘pretty much exactly like 90 minutes of a toddler sticking its stained finger in your face while giggling, “Looka my poopie!” (minus the cute factor).’
Sounds like fun, right?
